Pacific Fleet Notice

Announcements from Japanese and American officials immediately after the Battle of Midway could hardly have contrasted more. Japan claimed to have sunk two US carriers in exchange for one of its own, and to have "secured supreme power in the Pacific." In Washington, DC, Admiral Ernest King simply observed "the enemy forces have taken some hard knocks." King's reticence notwithstanding, news of the victory spread quickly (if not always accurately) and messages of congratulation poured into Pacific Fleet headquarters.

Two weeks after the battle, Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, forwarded some of the messages to his fleet: the fleet which had secured the first major defeat of the Japanese Navy in over 350 years.
