The Preferences dialog lets you control what messages are displayed, by specifying how far back in time the message board should go when retrieving messages. (There is information below about why we are doing this.)
By default, the message boards will display messages first posted in the last 60 days, as well as responses to those messages. Using the Preferences dialog, you can choose to see messages posted in the last 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, or all messages posted on the message board.
To view older messages, or only more recent messages, simply select a value from the box labeled "Show messages" and click the "Change" button. The setting you select will remain in effect until you change it again, or until you leave the message boards for more than thirty minutes.
No messages were removed from the message boards to make this feature possible! It may appear that there are fewer messages, but that's simply because older messages are no longer displayed by default. You can always select "All messages" to view every message posted since March 1999, when the message boards began.
Since the message boards began in March 1999, over 700 messages have been posted. Some individual boards contain hundreds of messages. It can be overwhelming to view all these posts, particularly if you're only interested in reading new or more current messages.
Limiting messages shown to those posted in the last 60 days (the default setting), ensures that the newest and most current messages are always easy to find. By using the Preferences dialog, you can always view older postings any time you like.
This feature also helps ensure the continued good performance of the message boards, and other dynamic areas of the site, such as the Noumea Image Library, by helping the message boards to run more efficiently.
