"Battleship 'X'" - the USS South Dakota BB-57 - and a destroyer maneuver at high speed during the Battle of Santa Cruz, 26 October 1942. South Dakota, charged with providing anti-aircraft defense for Enterprise during this engagement, was officially credited with 26 enemy planes shot down on this single day.
