Wasp CV-7 is engulfed by a gasoline-fueled inferno after being struck by two Japanese torpedoes, 15 September 1942. With a single spread of six torpedoes, Japanese submarine I-19 inflicted mortal damage on Wasp, damaged O'Brien DD-415 and North Carolina BB-55, and barely missed Hornet CV-8. Abandoned less than an hour after the attack, Wasp was sunk by US destroyers that evening.
