Trailing black smoke from damage already sustained, Hornet CV-8 is moments away from being struck by an enemy dive-bomber piloted by Sato Shigeyuki. A Japanese torpedo plane appears in the center of the picture, escaping after having dropped its torpedo. Hornet was lost during this engagement: the Battle of Santa Cruz, 26 October 1942.
