Admiral Raymond Ames Spruance, photographed 23 April 1944, shortly before the Marianas campaign in June and July 1944.

From Enterprise's bridge, Spruance commanded Task Force 16 at the Battle of Midway in June 1942.

Later in the war, Spruance and Halsey alternately commanded the US striking force in the Pacific, designated the Fifth Fleet when under Spruance's command, and the Third Fleet when under Halsey's.
