Vice Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, photographed 17 September 1942, at the end of his command of US carrier forces in the Pacific.

History has not been kind to Fletcher, but the fact remains that under his command, US carrier task forces sank five Japanese carriers and damaged two more, all in the first nine months of the war.
