ENS Frank R. Luscombe of VF(N)-90, in a Navy publicity photo dated 28 July 1943. The heavy garb depicted in this photo was not typical of that worn by naval aviators in the Pacific. Early 16 February 1945, Luscombe's Hellcat pitched into the waves shortly after takeoff. He was seen hanging on to the plane's belly tank, but slipped below the waves before he could be rescued.
