Northampton sailed in Enterprise's task force during a number of early war engagements, including the early Central Pacific raids in 1942, the Doolittle Raid and Midway. At Santa Cruz, in October 1942, Northampton attempted to take the gravely damaged Hornet CV-8 in tow before that ship was ordered sunk.

Northampton was lost at the Battle of Tassafaronga, the night of 30 November 1942, but not before halting a major Japanese attempt to reinforce their forces on Guadalcanal.
