Fred E. Bakutis, photographed as a Rear Admiral, commanded Fighting Squadron 20 in 1944.

Bakutis was shot down during the first day of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in October 1944. After drifting in an open raft for seven days, Bakutis was picked up by the submarine USS Hardhead (SS-365) on 30 October, and rejoined his squadron aboard Lexington CV-16 in early December.
