Picric acid covers Enterprise CV-6's flight deck from a dud enemy bomb hit, 18 March 1945. Released at a too-low angle, the 250-kg bomb struck the forward elevator and richocheted aft, striking the island and breaking apart. The tail section detonated below the bridge while the body of the bomb slewed across the flight deck, spilling explosive material. One man was killed and two injured in the attack.
