Smoke boils up from Belleau Wood CVL-24's flight deck following a Kamikaze hit, 30 October 1944. As part of Task Group 38.4 (Enterprise, Franklin CV-13, Belleau Wood, and San Jacinto CVL-30), Belleau Wood was operating east of Leyte Gulf at the time of the attack. Severely damaged, she retired to Ulithi for temporary repairs, before returning to the US West Coast. She returned to action in time for the February 1945 Toyko raids.
