LT(jg) John Shinneman of VF-10, receives a Distinguished Flying Cross from Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher, 3 June 1944. His citation reads in part: "For extraordinary achievement as a pilot of a carrier based fighter squadron in attacks on enemy based in the Marshall Islands, at TRUK, PALAU, YAP and WOLEAI, and at HOLLANDIA, from January to April 1944. ...In all of these actions his courage, skill and agressiveness were in keeping with the highest traditions of the naval service."
