Dorie Miller, from Plano, Texas, was a messman aboard the battleship West Virginia at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He moved his wounded Captain to safety, and although he had no training as a gunner, he ran to a gun mount and shot down several Japanese planes, "blazing away as though he had fired one all his life." He was awarded a Navy Cross for his actions in a ceremony aboard Enterprise CV-6, shortly before the Battle of Midway. This photo was taken during the ceremony.

Miller lost his life two years after Pearl Harbor, when the escort carrier Liscome Bay was torpedoed on 23 November 1943.
