Admiral Chester W. Nimitz presents the Distinguished Flying Cross to LCDR C. Wade McClusky, aboard Enterprise CV-6, 27 May 1942. At right, in foreground, is Dorie Miller, a mess cook from the battleship West Virginia BB-48, who hauled the ship's wounded captain to safety and single-handedly manned an anti-aircraft gun during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 December 1941.
