Warrant Officer Lawrence E. Wyffels, killed in action at Santa Cruz, 26 October 1942. Less than two weeks earlier, on 15 October, Wyffels had been awarded a Silver Star for his efforts to rescue shipmates and fight fires during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, on 24 August 1942.

He was killed instantly when an enemy bomb exploded in the compartment in which he and other members of his damage control party were stationed. The destroyer escort Wyffels DE-6 was named in his honor.
