Following the formal Japanese surrender, Admiral Halsey (left) and Vice Admiral McCain discuss an amusing anecdote while at the railing aboard Missouri BB-63. These two men are glad they no longer are required to make the decisions that sent young American men in harm's way. Planning for going home was probably on their minds just like everyone else. We do know that Halsey convinced McCain to stay for the ceremony.

"Slew" McCain would leave for the States and within four days of his arrival would be dead of a heart attack at his home in Coronado. Admiral Halsey would command US ships destined for the US West Coast. He would bring his small task force to San Francisco Bay passing the Golden Gate Bridge in the fog at noon, 15 October 1945.
