Noumea

Upper Island, May 1942

A detail from a larger image, this view shows Enterprise's upper island as it appeared early in the war, in April 1942. The whispy rectangular structure atop her tripod mast is the CXAM-1 air search radar. Forward and below the tripod mast and atop the pilot house is the Mk 33 director: note that no fire control radar is mounted on top of the director this early in the war. Part of her aft Mk 33 director can be seen to the left, behind the funnel.
