General Douglas MacArthur signs the Japanese surrender document in Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945. Behind MacArthur stand Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright (left),  who surrendered Corregidor to the Japanese in May 1942, and British Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Percival, who surrendered Singapore in February 1942. Both men are gaunt from years in Japanese POW camps.
