O'Hare became the United State's first hero of the war when he single-handedly downed five Japanese bombers in defense of the carrier Lexington CV-2 in February 1942. For his efforts he was awarded the Medal of Honor, and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander effective 8 April 1942. |
